Nobody in the room could have known the incredible story behind the man who quietly walked onto the America’s Got Talent stage.
Sal Gonzalez wasn’t there simply to audition.
He was there carrying a story of survival, sacrifice, healing, and hope.
A former Marine Corps machine gunner, Sal had been seriously wounded while serving in Iraq. In 2004, only two months into his deployment in Ramadi, his Humvee was struck by an IED.
The explosion changed his life forever.
Sal woke up a week later in a military hospital and learned that he had lost his leg.
But somehow, through unimaginable pain and trauma, he found a reason to keep moving forward.
That reason was music.
Sal explained that music became one of the most important tools in his recovery. It gave him a way to process the experiences of war, express emotions he couldn’t always put into words, and begin letting go of some of the trauma he carried.
He also dedicated himself to helping other injured service members, working with the Wounded Warrior Project to raise awareness and support for veterans.

He began performing Bill Withers’ classic “Ain’t No Sunshine,” and from the very first notes, the atmosphere changed.
