Nobody expected Wayne Woodward to become the surprise star of the night.
The 20-year-old from Sutton, Surrey stepped onto the stage with a cheeky smile, a thick Cockney accent, and the relaxed confidence of an everyday lad. The judges instantly compared him to actor Danny Dyer, and the audience couldn’t help but laugh along with his charming, down-to-earth personality.
Wayne casually explained that he does “bits here and there” in building work, while spending his nights singing in local bars, restaurants, and clubs. He spoke proudly about his close relationship with his family, especially his father, the man who first inspired him to sing. At first glance, nobody could have predicted what was about to happen next.
Then the music started.
The second Wayne opened his mouth to sing “The Way You Look Tonight,” the entire room froze in shock.
Gone was the rough Cockney voice everyone had just heard moments earlier. In its place came a smooth, rich, velvet-like baritone that sounded like it belonged in a Las Vegas theater decades ago. His voice carried the timeless elegance of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack era, filling the stage with effortless class and charm.
The judges looked stunned.
The audience erupted almost immediately, many jumping to their feet as they realized they were witnessing something truly special. No one expected such a dramatic transformation from the young builder from Sutton.
Every note felt natural. Every word carried confidence, warmth, and old-school swing magic. Wayne didn’t just sing the song — he transported everyone into another era.
Alesha Dixon couldn’t hide her amazement, calling his performance “effortlessly charming” and admitting she never expected THAT voice to come out of him. She even joked that Wayne could go “from Sutton to Las Vegas.”
David Walliams was completely won over by Wayne’s personality and talent, saying:
“I just like you… I think you’re brilliant.”
Even Simon Cowell, known for his tough criticism, admitted Wayne had huge potential despite a few rough moments during the performance.
By the end of the audition, Wayne received three massive YES votes, proving that first impressions can be completely wrong.
What started as a funny, lighthearted audition quickly became one of the most unforgettable surprises of the competition.
Nobody saw it coming…
And that’s exactly why the world fell in love with Wayne Woodward.
